A 2019-20 county budget with the same tax rate as last year was passed today (Thursday) in 14 minutes during the special session of the Giles County Commission.

Most of the $2.8247 tax rate goes to the County General Fund and General Purpose school budgets. The County General Fund will take $1.3248, and the General Purpose School Budget will receive $1.0355.

Commission Roger Reedy said he wanted to go on record that the tax levy is the same as last year and Giles County Executive Melissa Greene agreed.

The budget for 2019-2020 will be effective July 1, 2019 and ending June 30, 2020.

A total of $233,600 will go to Giles County Fire and Rescue, the same amount received in the 2018-19 budget year.

Without opposition, the commissioners unanimously approved $495,153 for nonprofit charitable agencies of Giles County,  which included the Rescue Squad amount.

Security bonds were authorized for Schools Director Phillip Wright, acting director Vickie Beard, Morgan Sutton and Giles County Shelter Director Morgan Sutton.

Adoption and Impound Fees at the Giles County Animal Shelter were also implemented by the commissioners.

No money will go to debt service, since the county has no long-term debt. Another .3480 cents will go to highway/public works and .1164 cents will go to other capital projects.

At the end of the special called meeting, Greene commended the work on this year's budget to Financial Management team, Assistant Schools Director Michael Gonzales, and all Commissioners and department leaders.
