You don't need a special reason to give blood just one that motivates you to donate. Whatever your reason, the need for a healthy and reliable blood supply is constant, says the American Red Cross.

The next opportunity to donate blood locally is Monday, July 24th, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Pulaski Recreation Center.

Donors will help change lives by giving blood but they will receive something, too. You'll receive a mini physical to check your pulse, blood pressure, body temperature and hemoglobin, says the A-R-C website.

Come prepared by having a light meal and plenty to drink before you donate blood. Also, bring your donor card, driver's license or two other forms of identification, and bring a list of medications you are taking.

At the July 24th blood drive, donors may give blood or make a Power Red donation, according to information found on the Red Cross website.

Donating blood is the most common type of donation and approximately one pint of whole blood is given and usually takes around an hour.

A Power Red donation collects the red cells but returns most of the plasma and platelets to the donor. These donors must meet specific eligibility requirements and have type A Negative, B Negative or O blood.
