A warning for area residents from neighboring Lincoln County…

A Fayetteville woman contacted police Thursday when a phone scammer posed as a medical bill collection agency.

Somehow the caller had gotten her mother’s social security number, according to a report prepared by Patrolman Aaron Vick with the Fayetteville Police Department. The caller said the intended victim had an overdue medical bill and needed to settle it or she would be arrested.

The police report indicated that other people have been victimized by the same scam, and, to be aware and vigilant, and never give out personal information over the phone.
